5. During both screenings I tried the "Dolby Sound" option. Admittedly the sound was much better than normal (there are over 40 speakers above the audience's head and vibrating chairs), but the ticket was also $5 more: $11 standard vs. $16 Dolby. If you have trouble hearing it is worth it, but if not then I would say forgo the Dolby Screenings.
The renovation is nice, seats are comfortable, and clean environment. The screens are big, sound system awesome. The biggest complaint is that the new restrooms are far too small for number of people. They could use some improvement on meal choices, especially healthy options. The prices are compatible with other theaters with reserved seating.
Saw "Ferdinand", highly recommend it.
I post more good reviews than bad, so I definitely don't feel bad about posting this. I'll make it short and sweet. We usually watch movies at our Oakley theater, but we decided to mix it up a little, head down to the Levee. Big BIG mistake. This is my second horrible experience at the Newport theater, this time involving young kids coming into our Rated R movie 3/4 the way through (the most important part) and yelling "boobs!" and "that's a big ol' booty" every time there was a scene with nudity (it was so loud we were unable to hear even the loudest scenes from the very back) with no policing by the staff whatsoever, not to mention the seats having a mind of their own, reclining and knocking over all of our popcorn, with nothing touching the button, and if you want a small popcorn - it'll cost you $9, or a huge tub for $10. But anyway, we had planned to eat at Dewey's afterwards, and the same kids showed up there too! They gave the staff a hard time and demanded seats (oldest about 11, youngest was 5!), so their thin-skinned security came and said "you guys should seat them, they're 'complying'". Really? Nice work Newport.
4. I wanted to have a water with my popcorn and my options were a $4 bottle of water or a small 4oz dixie cup that I could fill up. I understand that concessions are the money makers at a theatre, but at least provide a bigger cup for water. I assume smaller cups are given so people don't fill up there free cups with soda, but there must be a reasonable solution to this problem.
1. All the seats are reclining luxury seats, but they only recline to a set position of 45 degrees. It's less comfortable then other local theatre's whose seats recline all the way. Management stated, before the showing, that this was done by AMC because research showed that 45 degrees was the most comfortable position, but I suspect it was done because it requires less aisle room; therefore allowing more seats to be placed in an auditorium.
Literally stuck to the floor in the restroom. Two of four water fountains not working.
Pros:
Out of soap in the restroom.
Comfortable seating.
Cons:
I have seen two movies since the remodel, and the things that disappointed me stems from AMC, not the workers or management (who all were very kind and professional during both visits).
My husband and I purchased tickets online for a showing at the Newport AMC. We got a sitter, paid for parking and since we ordered online the ticket taker scanned my phone upon arrival. He showed us which theater and we then paid a fortune for snacks and drinks. We sat down for an 840pm showing around 815pm. After sitting there and going through all the preview stuff the movie was starting, but a manager came to us and asked to see our tickets because another couple had those seats . I showed him my phone and he rudely said, today is not the 3rd. I was confused because I bought these tickets late the night before so why would their online system sell the wrong tickets. Any way, because at this point we were super embarrassed, we asked to speak to a manager in the hall. He said I am the manager in a rude tone, and escorted us out like we were teenagers who snuck into a movie. I asked him why his ticket taker didn't catch this, because we arrived an hour early and we could have gotten different tickets or saved a huge embarrassment not to mention a lot of time that has now been wasted. He went on to say this actually happens all the time. Um, thats a problem that this theater should fix. So I then asked him to get us different seats for the movie, he said there weren't any, without checking. He said I can give you a refund and vouchers for another time. No thanks, We won't be coming back to any AMC. We told him nights out aren't easy to come by with kids and he just kept saying I know I have a kid, he seemed aggravated and discourteous. When he went to get us a refund the girl at the register looked at him confused and went on to roll her eyes. There were so other many ways he could have handled the situation but instead we left feeling accused and like we had been thrown out of a movie. Also when I asked for his supervisor name and contact he gave me a corner of a torn of piece of paper with a 877 number written on it. Very unprofessional for a large company, business cards with customer concern info and numbers are more appropriate. Not to mention he only refunded us $22 when online you pay fees so I actually was owed $25.72. This all being said I will NEVER go to an AMC theater again, there system fails and they treat you like garbage. "Management" is obviously lacking in customer service training. Also I wish there were an option for a zero star rating, they only received a 1 star because that was my only option.
Otherwise, my experiences were OK, yes half the facility was blocked off and it was a little warm, but I chalk those up to construction woes. As stated above, the two star rating is a reflection of AMC not the employees .
They just opened for the day, and popcorn in between the seats.
3. AMC has gotten rid of 'Small' sizes. You may buy a Medium bag of Popcorn or a Large; A medium soda, or a Large soda. In both cases, a medium is equivalent to what a Large was 10 years ago...it's just to much for one person. Another pet peeve is that the butter is not behind the counter, therefore if you want butter in the middle of your popcorn you have to have the attendant fill the popcorn up halfway, walk over 20 feet to put butter on, and then give the bag back to the attendant who fills up the remaining top half. It's inefficient and I don't understand why a butter dispenser can not be placed behind the counter.
2. At both screenings, the downstairs ticket booth was closed (permanently?). Upon entering the theatre there is a counter where you can buy tickets and/or have your tickets redeemed. So even if you bought your ticket in advance you still have to wait in the same line as if you had not purchased your tickets in advance. I can only imagine the line on a busy night if this is a regular thing.
Convenience fee greater than the ticket price for buying the tickets online.
